It depends what kind of small independent book store you own. Is it a Religious or spiritual bookstore? because if it is, the question would be relevant.
But if you own a general bookstore, then no, I personally do not think it's appropriate to ask that question to a casual acquaintance.
Religion is a private and sacred practice and many people could easily be judged by their views and practices (and not always favourably).
It's because everyone is different and we live in a mixed society, so therefore I think that religion should be treated, as it is at a dinner party like sex and politics, best avoided.
