What state should we move to?
My mom and siblings and I want to move to a different state. We are currently in California. What state would be best for families, children, and couples (since my boyfriend is moving with us). We're looking for somewhere a little more calm, mellow, safe, and affordable.

Sounds like fantasy land.
California itself has many different types of places, but none of them qualify as affordable. I think you need to give yourselves a few more parameters by which to find your destination. Do you like warm? 4 seasons? High elevation? A lot of humidity? Dry? Lots of trees and color? Big metro areas? Close to ocean?
I've been all over the U.S. I can tell you there are some beautiful places of many types. And the attitudes of people vary greatly from place to place too.
One thing you're going to find difficult is the way everyone seems so much more "uptight" compared to California.
Many places are very strict about things that California is liberal about.
There's really ALOT to consider.
In general, every major city has sub urban development surrounding, and varying areas.
For instance, one side of town is the "bad area", another is "snobby" and another is "wealthy"...
So think about where you would like to be, then start asking around about the best areas to live in that region.
What people do for a living may also play a major role in your decision.
