i have been re-homing cats for a long time.. nearly all my life. From what i know let him get used to his surroundings..DON'T LET HIM OUT SIDE, until he knows and likes you. leave food and water in one place only. don't move it to suit where the cat is, talk to him when he is hiding (if you know where he is) even play some relaxing music.. if you have any other cats or pets keep them any until he is getting a little more comfortable with his new surroundings. with a older cat it takes longer from them to deal with this.. this is something very big for your cat and also speak softly around him..

    hope this helps

I would recommend in a very large house, one litter pan per floor. This will eliminate any problems in the future of not using the litter pan. Be patient, he will soon discover, with your understanding, that this is his new home and start to wander about more freely.
