It really depends on what colleges you're considering applying for. About 1500 is the national average, 1800+ is good for many colleges, 2000+ is the applicant average for many very good colleges (UCLA, USC), 2200 is the applicant average for Harvard. As far as great, 2300, although that's just about the 75 percentile (25% applicants scored better) for Harvard. Although, I'd think for the student who is looking at many very good colleges, 2000 would be close to great if it makes them competitive. It's all relative! Look at the website of the colleges you are interested in for the admitted incoming freshmen profiles, so you can get an idea of average GPAs and SAT scores.

FYI; Middle 50% of scores means that 25% of students scored lower, and 25% of students scored higher, than those middle 50% numbers.

The average SAT score is 1500, so anything above that is a step above the rest.

As for a "good" score and a "great" score, that's really all a matter of opinion. In my opinion, I'd say anything above 2000 is a good score, and anything above a 2300 is a great score.

*These are based on the three-part composite score.
