It's all up to your needs.

I personally like Tokyo because I was born in Tokyo.

But if you like cold weather, nature and lower living cost, Sapporo is better.

Sapporo. It's the fifth biggest city in Japan, so you get the urban feel, but a 20 minute drive away and you're in the country. A 20 minute drive from Tokyo, and you're still in Tokyo.

If you've lived in the Northern USA, or Canada, Sapporo winter will feel like nothing. Tokyo summer will kill you.

I think the food is better, too. Real hard to find lamb in Tokyo, find it all over the place up here. Once you've tried it, you'll understand what I'm talking about.

Source(s): Been living in Sapporo for over 6 years, don't plan on leaving.

Lived in Tokyo for 3 years. Found it to be a cold place. Lots of concrete. Sapporo on the other hand has cooler weather during the summer. That's a big plus for me. Lots of snow in the winter though.

    My vote? Sapporo.

Now, if you don't like cold weather, go for Osaka. Near Kyoto and Nara and more traditional IMHO.

Tokyo is a great city to visit or spend a week, but I don't know about living there. Sapporo although a lot cooler is a smaller city and a lot more live-able.

I'd have to go with Sapporo as well. Smaller, and the streets have a different lay out. Gets bloody cold during the winter though.

Tokyo's not that bad, I like it.

"Better" is subjective depending on how you look at it.

    Better in what sense?

Sapporo freezes and gets tons of snow during the winter, it rarely snows in Tokyo.

If you were to factor in number of jobs, number of foreign jobs etc., Tokyo is your better place to live because of more opportunity.

    Sapporo

It's beautiful, lots of good onsen, and much more peaceful than Tokyo.

Hokkaido in general is gorgeous to live.

Can you afford to live in either one of them? That's what you should be looking at.

    Then Tokyo! :)
