Microsoft Word won't let me draw tables. What should I do?

I was trying to start a document with tables, but Microsoft Word keeps crashing on me, saying that Microsoft Word has encountered a problem. The warning box states:

"The information you were working on might be lost. Microsoft Word can try to recover it for you."

Then it tells me to check/uncheck if they want to recover the file and restart, and prompt me to tell Microsoft about this problem. Then the program tells me:

"We have created an error report that you can sent to help us improve Microsoft Word. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous."

What should I do to prevent these problems from happening again, and to have Microsoft Word let me draw tables again?
