For a Latin name, you could choose something like Albus (white or fair-skinned), from which the name of the Alps was derived because of being white with snow. Alba means the dawn or first light. Poor people may have just had one name, no surname, because they didn't belong to important families.

They were English. That was around the time when the educated were learning to speak English more and more. Shortly after the King James bible was written with the 47 contributing authors and paradise lost. All considered masterworks of modern English.
