It's about time. Why couldn't they have done this a long time ago?

Next week, NASCAR is expected to announce changes which will eliminate drivers from running for championships in more than one series...drivers will have to declare which series he wants to earn points in at the start of the season, and any other series he races in will be for nothing more than a race-winning trophy...very good and needed change!!

Update:

Who cares if it is a field of "nobodys"...it's intention was and should be a feeder system for the Cup series. All the cup drivers had their day in the nationwide series, let the new guys have theirs. You want to see a bunch of major league ball players going down and playing on the AAA teams every time their major league team isnt playing? One or the other, that should be the rule.

This idea might backfire on NASCAR. They might end up w/ a field of nobodys in Nationwide. I won't be watching that.

I totally agree with this change! It is fair to the drivers running Nationwide or truck only.

But there is even a better way to thinking about this!. We just won't have any full time drivers winning races in the two lower series except on non-companion series weekends.

Pretty much the same thing as we have now, but none the cup guys will be thinking about points. Those races should be very interesting!

Agreed. I can't express how much I hate seeing a cup regular win a championship in the Nationwide Series, or even Truck Series. Hell, I don't even like cup regulars racing in the Nationwide Series period, to be honest. But, yes, this new rule is definitely a step in the right direction. Ideally, I would like to see NASCAR limit the amount of races that cup regulars are allowed to run in the rookie leagues. Watching a cup guy dominate the races in the other series is still going to get old, even though they aren't eligible for the championship.

You have a win-win scenario for the Nationwide Series. For one, you'll still have guys like Edwards, Busch, Harvick and Keselowski race when they can and bring seats to the races. But then you'll have the focus shifted primarily on the "nobodys" through the championship race. The separate championship system for the Nationwide guys will give them more incentive to compete against each other while showing what they can do against the Cup guys in the races.

I agree. Kyle Busch has taken a lot of wins from other drivers this year in the Nationwide series. So now it's the younger drivers turn to win races and Championships. This is how other drivers develop. If they win a Championship for their first time, that makes them eligible to compete in cup. There is no need for a Cup driver to drive in these other two series. Let guys like Allgaier and Bayne win a Championship. These guys are very competitive and I agree with making that change. That's how you become a true competing driver if you can win Championships.

"Who cares if it's a field of nobody's?" The track owners and promoters, that's who. They are the ones who will lose out when ticket sales decline. Cup drivers put butts in the seats at Nation-wide races, and that can't be argued. And do you want the Nation-wide TV coverage to go back to where it was in the 90's? I don't.

No, Nation-wide was never meant to be a "feeder" series, but a respected, stand alone series in it's own right. Sure, many cup drivers went through it, but you really need to have your poop in a group before you get to Nation-wide, so the AAA analogy doesn't apply, and you are disrespecting the series.

Everyone wants to push the "EASY" button for Nation-wide drivers, but playing against a better opponent improves YOUR game.

Personally, I just like to see a Trevor Baine go up against a Kyle Busch and do well.

Yep! Welcome change indeed. I read the expected change would simply be that if your 25th or better in points in Cup, you will not be pointed in Nationwide. Period.

Cup driver's can still compete as usual and commit to running both series full time.

This means Reed Sorenson and Elliot Sadler could be battling for the Nationwide points title in 2011 etc. etc!!

Sounds like a good way for NASCAR to further decrease ticket sales for Nationwide and Truck series.....
