Debate about "Walking Dead" the Series. **SPOILERS if you haven't seen the most recent episode**?
So, some friends of mine and I have been watching the new AMC Walking Dead series and we LOVE it. But one of my friends brought up some interesting points and I wanted to hear your thoughts on the matter.
1. Did Meryl use the stolen van to take the zombies back to camp as his crazy form of vengeance for being handcuffed to a roof?
My friends say yes but I say there are too many problems inherent in trying this and even Meryl isn't crazy enough to try. For instance, the cab and the hold were open to one another; how would he keep himself safe from the zeds? How would he lure them in and then close the doors without putting himself in danger? How would he get them back out again? I know there are ways to rig up remote controls for the doors, but I don't think he really had time to try. I'm thinking he had at MOST 5 hours before the group came back and discovered the van was gone. That isn't enough time for him to rig it up, set up with bait of some sort, get a bunch of zombies into the truck, then drive up to camp.
2. Darryl's arrows. He doesn't sterilize them between uses. That means he shot two zeds right before shooting the mexican guy in the butt. Wouldn't that be like the mexican getting bitten...since it's blood borne and the zed's blood would still be on the arrow? Or does the infection die after being in contact with air for a certain amount of time? Would the mexican he shot turn? What about the food that he hunts with it? Wouldn't it be contaminated?
I'm interested to hear your thoughts on these questions. Since we've talked it to death and have come to no clear conclusion.

I think Meryl went somewhere he knows and Darryl will have to figure out where that is. It is possible he drove slowly and led them to the camp, but knowing his brother is there and only wanting revenge on the ones who left him, put that in the not so likely category. He had the frame of mind the cauterize his wound and make a clean get away.
Most blood born infections die (so to speak) when they come in contact with open air. I remember this was a big deal back in the 80s when it was discovered that HIV was a blood born virus. He carries a lot of arrows and I have yet to see him take one from a walker and load it right away. He might sterilize them off camera, to do that he just has to drop them in a bottle of rubbing alcohol.

I am with your friends on this one, actually. The people I watch it with also believe that is how the geeks got to camp. I agree with you that getting them IN the stolen truck has too many problems, but there are other ways he could have got them there. He could have driven slowly and honked the horn/made a lot of noise and they would have followed [don't forget, they are drawn to noises]. Especially with Meryl's hand being severed, he could have taunted/lured them with how infected and bloody he was... used rags covered in it to somehow get them to follow, or some sort of similar trap.
The timing does seem a bit suspect [the part of the group that walked getting back to camp mere moments after all the walkers did], but the good guys ran pretty fast, knowing that Meryl was probably on the way. On the other side of it, Meryl would have had to go slow if he were luring a bunch of dead to the camp.
As for number two, I never thought about that! You're right. I hope they don't someday return to that compound and find the infection has reached there because of Darryl's carelessness. Or, maybe we are just supposed to assume that he does sterilize them and we're just not shown that part.
Either way, it's fun that the show can get people talking like this :]

1. Meryl didn't go back to camp, remember the guys walked back to camp and Meryl should have been there long before they got there. I do believe he took the van, where he went....who knows? I am sure that it will be discovered tomorrow.
2. Considering most viruses don't survive for that long outside of a body, I imagine that it's why no one has gotten sick from them. If you watch him, he is quite careful in how he touches them and if I remember correctly he has more than just a couple arrows on hand, probably close to a dozen. So he might be consciously picking older ones to use. Then again, maybe that is a detail the writers have overlooked?

1> I agree with you, no way Meryl brought those geeks back to camp as revenge, there were too many attacking the camp to have all fit in the van plus he only has one hand...LOL and I'd bet he will show up in the next episode or the season finale and mess things up for the group somehow.
2> I think that to keep it simple, the only way to "turn" is direct contact, getting bit or scratched, i mean everybody is bashing in the geeks brains with baseball bats and getting covered in blood fighting them off, there's bound to be some blood splash in their mouths or eyes ya know...but then again when grimes and glen covered themselves in zombies guts they said be careful not to get on their skin???
