If I've just popped online the ads will usually be very generic and based solely on my geographical location at the time. I'll get ads for sales going on at major chains such as Target and Kohl's, events in my area, and a random assortment of other mini-commericials. After being online for a while the ads will often change and be more youthful and targeted towards my interests. The ads are loosely tailored to the user based on his or her IP address and the cookies that have accumulated from the sites that have been visited. I always clear out my cookies before I put my laptop to sleep, so there isn't a stockpile of information about my consumer identity for AdChoice to draw from when I first log on.
Now that I've been online for about an hour and gone to a few sites, the ads that appear on the side of the screen are marketed towards young women in an urban city. I'm getting ads for STA (Student Travel Agency), the New Zealand tourist board, Urban Outfitters, a makeup company, AllSaints Spitalfields (London-based clothing store with a new location in LA), and the Grove (shopping center). Earlier this fall I always got bombarded by political ads, and I noticed a significant decrease in them when I turned off cookies. I'd been reading a ton of blogs and newspapers about the elections, and my cookies were revealing my political interests to the marketers who use AdChoice.
I actually really like the ad for AllSaints. I got a coupon from them that was legitimate. Whooo hoooo.
: )
Btw, I just realized that AdChoice gives you the option to specify the type of ads that you wish to receive. If you click on the top of the ads it will lead you to the AdChoice screen.

At the bottom of the page it also shows your age range, gender, location, the Yahoo sites you visit the most, and the type of things you search for. It's actually amazingly accurate for me. I fall in the 13-18 age range; am a female; live in Los Angeles; my main retail purchases are books, music / entertainment, clothing and cosmetics; I'm interested in travel and education; and I read a lot of news sites. Wow.
Those cookies pack in a lot of information.

They change constantly. I don't think it has to do with my age; the most previous one was for UPS :P
