Should hip-hop lyrics be considered poetry?

Yes but only the lyrics and verses with deep profound and meaningful lyrics I have heard a few hip hop songs that sound that like poetry.

Talib Kweli, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Atmosphere, The Roots are some of the most poetic rappers I've heard, and yes there music does convey the beauty and drama of real poetry. They also use clever rhyme schemes, similes, double meanings and metaphors sometimes just like any good poet would use.

Most mainstream rappers for the exception of the old school and conscious emcees are'nt poets however they just write some meanless trash overnight.

they are poetry. there is some out there thats garbage and has no meaning, but there are a lot of hip hop artists that truly speak of struggle, and pain, and express their lives through their work.

technically yes. however it should be considered a lesser form of poetry. rap doesn't convey the beauty and drama that a traditional poem does. besides, how many words actually rhyme with ''hoe''?
