At what age should children be considered adults?

The age at which this Country (USA) makes children face adult charges for crimes is decreasing. In Pennsylvania they tried a child of nine for "molesting" his seven-year-old brother. They charged a 12-year-old for murder in Florida.

I have my own "opinion" but I want to hear what others have to say on this matter.

ALSO when is a child too young to be charged at all (The statutory age was once universally seven.)

Update:

Is rehabilitation after murder or rape possible?

Update 2:

If they can become an adult for purposes of prosecution for crime should they also be considered adults if they do something very good?

My husband says that at age 13 he believe children should have been taught well enough BUT that is not always the case. Some kids don't mature as fast as others, but even at a younger age they should have some sort of punishment because they are starting to know right from wrong .

For mine there are several schools of thought around the answer to your question.

1.. An animal is considered "mature" or an "adult" when it is able to procreate.

    2. Human beings, for all that they have conscious thought, are animals.

This theory would lend itself to declaring a human is an adult once they've passed (or perhaps reached) puberty.

Human beings mature at differing rates, Diet plays a part. So does biology, culture, heritage and community. Fact is, puberty is a very risky time for the human animal due to the extreme nature of the changes happening to the organism. Hormones affect all sorts of things but most importantly they affect the personality and psyche of the young human. If that human is given adult responsibilities then the outcome could be tragic. The family unit has traditionally been the primary , what, control (?) in determining the maturity of the youth. Girls got married of in their early teens and boys went off to war or work.

Our modern civilisation is geared towards producing the best possible adults. Members have learnt to cherish childhood as the proper breeding ground for a well balanced adult (no matter how hard or fast the young want to grow up - it still takes time). Therefore laws have been enacted that say before such and such a time (age, generally) a child is a child. Somehow, magically, they become an adult after that threshold has been crossed.

I dunno though. I think a child "becomes" an "adult" when they willingly, knowlingly and with forethought take on adult responsibility or commit an "adult" crime.

It depends on the Childs mind and thoughts when they commit a crime. I don't know how young you have to be but, It seems that most everyone over 14 gets charged as an adult.

I dont think anyone under the age of 18 should be charged as an adult. While they may commit awful crimes. If they are thrown in with adults the chances of any hope of rehabilitation are gone.

I say 16. That's from a biased teen. Some may say 21 because that is when you truely make informed decisions because at that he the frontal lobe in your brain is developed an that tells you whats right or wrong. But ya i say 16 because most are pretty mature by then, no what's right or wrong, can drive, can get a job, and know how to handle emergencies.

Twenty-five. The human brain is not fully mature until the mid-twenties. The last part of the brain to mature is the part that is responsible for decision-making.

Seven is a good age for starting to hold children responsible. The capacity for empathy begins to develop around age seven.

it really depends on what type of children were talking about. are they mature? have responsibility? do their work and manage their own problems?? if so then we could treat them as adults. but not consider them as adults. i would say by 14 or 15 you can tell what type of a teenager they are. :) hope i helped.

    I would say 16 personally
