why is public transport so dirty!?
Having travelled on the bus for the first time in ages i paid my fare which was not cheap. and to my astonishment became shocked at all the litter (free newspapers) all over the floor and seats. i managed to clear my seat only to find the some young dirty lout with his feet up on the seat next to me. he had mud on his trainers and was wiping them on the seat in front of him. he was not the only person putting his feet up on the seats. and i noticed on some of the seats there was something that looked like dog dirt.
surely the bus driver should monitor this as it was a single decker bus, or there should be some signage to say do not put your feet on the chairs or face a cleaning bill or better still cameras in the ceiling.
i can understand now that people would rather use the car than public transport and i do not blame them,
if the seats were correctly positioned this would eradicate this filth!
come on bus companies SORT YOUR SELF OUT!

Please don't blame the transit companies for this. People have to take pride in their transit system (ie: buses, subways, railways, etc) and take some personal responsibility. The people who are filthy, leave trash, stick their gum on the chairs, put their feet up etc don't do that because it's public transit, but because that's just how they are (most likely in their own homes or vehicles too!)! You can't blame the transit companies if individuals like that are the disgusting ones. Yes they do fine people, but only if they get caught. They're not going to spend millions on trying to identify people on cameras - but if they catch you in the act they will slap you with a fine. You can't eradicate filth when people are the ones who don't take pride in themselves and the spaces around them.

Why blame the companies when it is us,the public, that makes the mess. They cannot clean the bus non stop all day . We should be more thoughtful and considerate and show some respect for other people and other peoples property.

Because the public are dirty, simples.
As far as I'm concerned, public transport is a Taxi.

Because we're not prepared to spend money on it. Public transport has been flogged off to private companies who have no interest other than to make money. If you vote for successive cheapskate governments, that's what you get. If there was a "lets all pay more tax so we can have better public services" party, I bet you wouldn't vote for them. (There was, you didn't)

Surely from what your description indicates your question should really have said why are public transport users so dirty.

I'm afraid its the people who do it who are at fault, and even their parents for not setting the right standards in many cases no matter how old they are.
