Any particular cats meant for first time owners?

So I've only ever owned dogs my whole life. This may sound like a stupid question but I'm not around cats too much. Are their specific breeds that are better for first time owners? Of course if I were to ever get one, I'd adopt it. Just curious. :)

Well over 97% of cats aren't a particular breed. And with over 99.9% of the cats in shelters no particular breed - don't focus on a breed if you intend to adopt.

Just go to a shelter and choose the cat that picks YOU. An adult cat would be a far better choice for you than a kitten since the personality is right there before you. Adult cats are also much less hyper. They won't be biting and scratching you and waking you at all hours of the night. They're also perfectly content to sleep the day away while you're at work while kittens can get pretty lonely.

It's not stupid. The only issue with finding a purebred cat is that compared to dogs, they are few and far between.

Check out this site: http://www.cfainc.org/breeds.html Offhand, the most laid-back, lazy, and sweet cat I ever handled was a Ragdoll. Beautiful with points, fluffy yet silky fur, just draped in my arms like a stuffed animal and purred away. Amazing - since many cats I've handled in my life would rather claw my face than be loved. Only drawback to a Ragdoll would be children not taking them seriously as a living, breathing, feeling creature and treating them as a toy instead, due to their easygoing nature.

I was in charge of the Cat/Small Animal Adoption rooms at the humane society, which housed near 80-100 animals at any given time, the majority of them cats. The cats ran the gamut of finicky and pissy to loveable and near dog-like. If you don't have a particular breed that you're smitten with, then I suggest you adopt. We killed more cats than I can recall - very disheartening to think that they were killed for want of a home.

You'd probably do better adopting an older cat. Kittens can be really trying and should always be adopted in pairs for proper social development. Talk to the shelter workers about what you have in mind for a relationship with your cat. They can usually point you towards the cuddlers, the "cool" cats, and the loners. Be sure to mention you have dogs. They can show you cats who are dog tolerant. Hang out with a few cats and get to know them. Don't be surprised when a cat picks you. It usually happens that way. Best of luck finding a new kitty pal!

well not really all cats are basically a like and if you see a cat that you like at the shelter and you have a connection with it thats the cat you take.
