What transfers the energy from a car engine to the wheels?

When your foot is off the gas pedal of your car the wheels are not moving. When you slightly apply pressure to the gas pedal what takes the power from the engine and transfers it to the wheels. Likewise, when you are going 50 miles per hour on the freeway and then you take your foot off th gas pedal what releases the engine power going to the wheels when you take your foot off of the gas pedal?
