Does Oxidation come from the Atmosphere?

G'day Shiny Disco,
Thank you for your question.
It generally comes from oxygen in the atmosphere although oxygen is not always involved. It took its name from reactions with oxygen such as rust or rotting fruit. According to Wise Geek " Technically, however, with the discovery of electrons, oxidation came to be more precisely defined as the loss of at least one electron when two or more substances interact."
I have attached sources for your reference.
