what is a good 3D illustration program?

It really depends on what you want to do, each has their strong points. You just need to read some reviews or user forums to get further ideas of what you want to do.

Animation: Maya, 3DSM

3DSM is also nice for architectural, interior modeling - Autodesk is making a 3DSM Design version that is taking over VIZ - it has some different palettes than 3DSM.

3D sculpting: Mudbox, Zbrush

Concept/sketching: Photoshop/Illustrator, Painter, Sketchbook Pro

3D product modeling: Rhino, Alias, FormZ, Cinema 4D

Rendering: VRAY, Hypershot(no longer made)- the 2 company's had a disagreement and are making their own versions now seperately- Shot and Keyshot. There are others, but VRAY seems to be an industry standard

3D Engineering/Manufacturing & drafting: Solidworks, ProE, Inventor,

Drafting: AutoCAD .dwg files work with several other programs, but not my favorite program.

There are 100s of other programs out there for different industries as well. CAM/CNC to architectural, cabinets, etc.
