2003 hyundai elantra steering problems?

My car has done 55,000km. It is slightly overdue for a service but just wondering if someone can help me work out what the problem is before I get it booked in.

Wheel alignment or steering seems to be way off. Car likes to veer left quite considerably. Turning right the steering wheel is very stiff at times and there is a 'shudder' at low speeds.

The brakes sometimes seem stiff and sometimes more loose and when applied harder they make an awful groaning sound.

Also the steering wheel 'locks' at times. When this happens the brake pedal cannot be depressed at all, is this a normal feature of the hyundai?

Update:

thanks. my brother said low power steering fluid could be the problem but its fine.

i really should check my tyre pressure. i'm just scared to cos I usually let more air out than goes in :( maybe I should ask someone at the servo at the risk of looking like a total dumb ass!! LOL.

Several problems, answered in order -

the veering is due to low tire pressure / alignment out of adjustment / possible parts in front end that need inspection and replacement ( tie rods, etc ); this also would account for the shudder & stiff steering wheel

brakes - pads and shoes need to be replaced; get estimates from several shops

the steering wheel should not lock, unless the vehicle is parked and the key is out of the ignition; anything else that causes a locking needs to be looked at by a mechanic

Most likely the tires just need balanced, it could also be possible for a tire to be low, or even like the one person stated you may have a bent rim. Check the tire pressure first. If it's fine then take it in and have them balance the tires and during the balance maybe even before they might find a bent rim. Another possibility is that the tires are going bald, which will make the tire wobble, and last on the list a bad suspension part and if so then fix the problem have it aligned and that should cover it and just so you know hyundai's are not junk it's all in how you take care of it. I don't care what anybody says thats the truth take really good care of your car and will last a long time.
