i like your enthusiasm. but your situation doesnt sound good for a 13 year old. with a 12ga slug you would have to be pretty close to get a good shot. at least compared to a rifle, which is what most people hunt coyotes with. i dont know about your location, but usually you have to get away from houses and building to get close to coyotes. they steer clear of most anything that smells human. (of course there are incidents of coyotes close to the house, relax everybody, im just saying that generally they avoid people.) so you wouldnt be close to someone who could help.

that rule about hunting by yourself at 12 is really aimed more at maybe dove hunting in the pasture by the house. or sitting at the opposite end of the tree row from your dad when you are deer hunting. it doesnt necissarily mean you are ready to go chase bears through the mountains on foot. ok, that example is pretty extreme. but i think coyote hunting with slugs in wolf country by yourself is a little closer to the adult end of hunting.

stay excited about it! in another 5 years you will be ready to go and hard and as often as you want. think of the next few years as basic training. lots of target shooting, rabbits, squirrels, dove. the kinds of things you can hunt close to the house and dont require you to square off with predators.

In todays politically correct world, yes. In reality 13 is the perfect age for hunting. You should have a much greater appreciation for it. Anything from .22 lr on up is great for coyotes. Its getting close enough to hit them that'll be your challenge.

Bring a friend along, or a good mentor\coach to help you though. You always want a buddy cause its more fun if you have someone to share your experiences with, and then there is always someone there in the event of an emergency.

I was hunting alone and with friends from 10 years old on, and I'm 45 now. Good luck and have fun. When I was alone though I was always on a friend of the families farm, or somewhere where people knew where I was so make sure you are on familiar territory. In the 21st Century you have the added luxury of borrowing or bringing a cell phone too, so do that also.

I think 13 is fine. A center fire rifle would be much better in most cases. The shotgun severely limits the distance that you can shoot one. If a shotgun is all that you have, it will work with slugs. My son was 9 the first time he shot a coyote by him self. We saw one in the field behind the house. It was intent upon digging in the field. I hobbled out the back door with a .243. I was having leg problems and could not walk around very well. It was extremely windy and the coyote was out about 200 yds. I couldn't really get to a rest so opted to not shoot. I went back into the house and my oldest son wanted to chase it off with the ATV. I suggested he take the .243 and try to shoot it. He got on the ATV and got within about 80 yds of it. The coyote was extremely dark colored and when it allowed him to get that close, I knew something was wrong. He hopped off, used the ATV for a rest and killed it. He couldn't find it and so his 5 year old brother and he went back to look for it. A little while later I heard the ATV coming back to the house and heard a knock on the window. They had found it, tied it behind the ATV and dragged it home. It was missing most of its fur. It had the worst case of mange that I have ever seen. I made them drag it back out into the field.

Most coyote's fur is much lighter in color. Most coyote are the size of a large cat and they hunt alone.Use a dying rabbit sound to bring them in.Wolves are 3 times the size of a coyote and hunt in packs mostly.Get a rifle to kill them like a 243,25-06,or a7mm-08 they are light recoiling for a kid your age.A 12 gauge is a 75 yard gun at best.Coyotes are to sly to get in range of your shotgun.

Its legal at 12,and yes I think its fine.Me being just a little older than you I would hunt all day if I had the appropriate land. Also go out with an adult first so you know what a coyote looks like. And since you don't eat them use buckshot.

"how do i tell them apart from wolves if i go"?!?!?!?!?!? no. HELL no. you really shouldnt go alone if you cant tell the difference between a coyote and a wolf. stick to paintball and airsoft until you can get someone with experience to show you how to hunt. dont give up on hunting, just wait until youve been a few times with an experienced hunter. goodluck.

  • wow kid.... you should spend some time with some guys that know what theyre doing first.. go on a couple hunts with them and learn. i just started hunting last year, im 17, and havnt gone by myself. (there are alot of different types of duck) and i would think you would need to b way to close with a 12 ga. id get like a .270

That is MUCH too young to hunt alone ESPECIALLY if you can't tell the difference between a wolf and a coyote. WAY too many cows have been shot during deer season.

Lets take a different approach. Who cares if its a coyote or wolf if you see a wolf kill it or it will kill you. Kill em both and as for the bullet a slug will do just fine.

  • 1 decade ago

Coyotes are usually alot smaller and slimmer than wolves. so they should be easy to spot..as for the bullet i have no idea. sorry

    good luck :)
