How can there be self-help “groups"?

    Because someone creates them and people join? I think you need to be more detailed with your question.

    It's a singular joining a plural.

    They are outside of the normal 'network' of approved society professionals....such as government or medically affiliated. Anyone can form these groups with limited education or credentials.

    Because the members go, voluntarily, to help themselves specifically by addressing their shared issues in hopes of resolving them usually without a professional therapist present.
