Naming your child after your father?

Would it be strange if I named my son after my dad? Both me and my partner love my dad's cool name 'Ivey". Opinions please...

It's not unusual to name a baby after one or both Grandparents. I believe it's an honour and your Dad would be thrilled.

Ivey's a very cool name! It's definitely something you don't hear very often. I think it's great if your dad has a nice name, but my father's name is Gary, so I'll personally be steering clear :)

Source(s): No offence to anyone named Gary, it's just not my taste at all :)

No it is not strange at all to name your son after your dad but if you do just remember if you ever have another son your father-in-law will almost certainly be expecting the second child to be named after him

Your choice says as much about you as it does your grandfather. It respects your grandfather and your heritage while showing your respect. It is unique yet not way out there. I do think it works well as a middle name too. If you are close to your partner's grandfather or father you could pair it with his name. That would honor both sides of the family. Do realize you will subject him to some people miss-spelling it as Ivy, but if it didn't bother grandpa...

Not at all. You could use it as a middle name but still call him that. Or just make that his first name either way would work. Ask your dad what he thinks. My next born with either have my dads first name and a middle name or have my dads middle name as a first name.

My son is named after both of his grandfathers - his first name is from my husbands father and his middle name is from my father. I think that they were both honoured that we'd want to name our baby after them.

My son's name isn't the exact same name - but I don't think it'd be that strange if it was.

No,in many casess it's actually quite traditional to name a son after his dad/grandad.If you both like the name then go ahead;your dad would be honoured.

It's definitely not weird to name your son after your dad. If you think it might get confusing, use it as a middle name.

    Great idea!

Our 2nd child has my father`s name as his middle name... My father was very touched by this since he had 3 daughters and no one carried the family name..lol So at least his 1st name is carried by my son! :)
