I hate to tell you but it pretty much just comes down to sitting down and memorizing them. There are easy ones to recognize like Alcohol all it is, is -OH. With amine and amide you know that there will be an N somewhere in the group based on the name. I always think of vinegar with the carboxilic acids they always have a COOH *(Mentally i associate it with the sound i think i would make if you ingest a little too much vinegar, idk its worked for me) the ones that are the toughest are the aldehydes and ketones they both have an O but placement makes them differnet. What i can tell you though, is there are ones that you will se in much more frequency then others, aside from that organic test that covers all functionel groups. Alcohols are used much more then mose youll see amines a bit, as well as carboxylic acids, but after the test or whatever you wont see much from ketones, esters, ethers, amides and others. DOn't know if that helped much but good luck.

false. alkanes, alkenes and alkynes are also functional groups.

a functional group is simply a collection of atoms that have similar reactivity, regardless of the rest of the molecule.
