WEll i was like you i didnt think sims 3 would be that good. But still I enjoy both. Sims 3 is very nice with its being able to create any color and u dont buy clothes u own them. I lik sism 2 for its expanions and its downloads. But i say try out sims 3 i did and i luv it and i now i think 2 or 3 other ppl who luv the sims 3. But i totally enjoy both so HAPPY SIMMING

I like them both, somewhat evenly. I love Sims 2's somewhat cartoonier look; it works so much better for the zany aspect of the Sims. You can do so much with the TS2 without being bound by the 'reality' of it.
Sims 3, while graphically spiffy and full of amazing features, almost feels like it's trying to be too realistic, and because of that (and the new character creator), many of the Sims start to look the same. I love being able to follow my Sims and harass them at work, instead of being stuck watching over an empty house, and the designing tools are absolutely beyond fantastic. There are also a lot more opportunities and interactions to have your Sims engage in, but the bizarre encounters seem a bit out of place.
So basically, it boils down to whether you're looking for the good ol' zany Sims, or the not-quite-realisticky Sims 3 with the amazing fashion tools.

Sims 3. Even though its a bit more complicated at first, its really fun once you get the hang of it. If you haven't gotten Sims 3 Late Night yet I suggest you get it as well.
