Jithendra- Does google maps provide you about details of condition of roads or compare the alternative route options ? Hence the posting and I got the answer.

The only way to reach Yercaud is via Salem. From Chennai travel on the GST road cross Tambaram, Chengulpet, and Villupuram. At Villupuram take a right to cross Chinna Salem and Aathur to reach Salem(Heard road from Aathur to Salem is very bad so please watch out)-this 45 kms strech takes about 75 minutes. From Salem cross fairlands and continue straight to reach Yercaud foothills and continue to reach the top(There are about 20 hairpin bends on the strech uphill)-Total distance from Chennai works out around 370-380 kms

The answer given by Sidharth is right but the roads are bad. The better way is to take the toll road from Chennai to Bangalore and deviate from Krishnagiri Dharmapuri Salem and Yercaud.
