The virus will be on the hard drive. In saying that, you could still use the hard drive if you wipe it and/or use it as a slave drive in the new system. If you wipe it, you could then install a fresh operating system on it safely. For a good disc wiping program, have a look at Eraser -- http://eraser.heidi.ie/ -- or DBAN -- http://www.dban.org/

You can install the infected drive as a slave in another computer, this will prevent the virus from activating.
The next step is to scan the infected drive with whatever anti-virus program you have on the master drive. Do NOT open (run) any files on the slave before running the virus scan, doing so could possibly infect the master.

The Hard Drive of your computer is where everything is stored.
As to what part of the hard drive is infected. There are a lot of factors and variables that go into Malware, Trojans, Virus's, RootKits. Each virus is unique.
You could always reformat your computer if you don't need any information off the hard drive.
I recommend getting BitDefender or Kaspersky software for your new hard drive.

Uh, the hard drive.
Viruses infect files inside of the hard drive, not the physical parts themselves

attempt to work out in case your anti virus can delete them in secure mode. additionally unplug your internet as Trojan downloaders do what they're named for... additionally alert your friends on your digital mail account to no longer open up any emails you have sent (worms deliver emails on your friends containing them) To do away with it, shop on with what anybody else is announcing.
