how do I get my asus dvd burner to work.?

I am trying to get my external dvd/cd burner (Asus) to work on my hp computer as an option over the internal dvd/cd burner. it doesn't seem to work.

Update:

the problem is my computer does recognize it but not as a secondary option to the built in cd/dvd burner. as an example say I wish to burn a cd of my music when I click burn no additional option box opens to choose which unit it directs it solely to the built in unit.

It should be plug and play if Windows has the appropriate chipset driver. If Windows won't even detect the drive when plugged to USB port, something could be wrong with the USB cable or connectors.
