Can someone explain NFL practice squads to me?

I'm new to all the behind the scenes "transactions" with players being added to or deleted from practice squads vs. being cut.

Example - on the Saints - Sean Canfield was activated from practice squad 11/23, cut 12/1, added to practice squad 12/4, deleted from practice squad 12/8. I've heard they're still paid well but still -- that's an awfully uncertain existence. Your psyche has to take a nosedive after awhile?

A practice is like being in the United state Reserves. These players are not officially on the team but they are a member of the organization. They practice regularly with the rest of the team and have their own numbers usually. When a member of the team is hurt of the practice squad member works really hard they get called on "signed" to the team. When the player who was injured gets healthy then they get cut again. On the practice squads they still make money but not as much as the pros.

The practice squad is what the 1st team practices against, using the plays the next opposition will do to work out the kinks of the real teams plays.

Several years ago a PS QB was told to play like Dan Marino, he said if he could he would be leading every other team in the league.
