It might make you sleepy (or have the opposite effect and make you hyper), but it is not meant to be an anti-anxiety medication. If you are having panic attacks, you need to see your doctor for appropriate treatment.

Benadryl is an anti-histamine that can have a pretty strong sedative effect; it might help a little, but only by making you kind of sleepy (a similar drug of the same class, hydroxyzine, is sometimes used for anxiety). With that said, you should NOT try to self-medicate using Benadryl - it can be dangerous, and is also not the best choice; if you are really having panic attacks, you need to see a doctor for the correct treatment.

NO NO NO NO
My Allergist (one of the best in the State) has had me on benadryll and a slew of other drugs to combat severe chronic hives. Benadryll may make you tired if you don't use it regularly, but it has no effect on anxiety. In fact, some of the other meds I'm on for the hives can make my anxiety worse (steroids).
Call your doctor, and take your Mom with you so the Doc can explain why she's wrong!
