How long does a large envelope actually take to ship USPS First Class (domestic)?

I mailed a large envelope on Dec. 4th from Illinois to California using USPS First Class. I know USPS website says 2-3 business days, but I've noticed a lot of times it is more like 3-5 business days. I was informed by the recipient today (Dec. 14 ... 7 business days after mailing) that it still has not arrived. Is this just typical holiday season back-up? At what point should I assume the item is simply lost in the mail? Thanks.

The easiest way to answer ALL of your questions is to just drop in at your local post office some time when they're not busy (not first thing in the morning, not at lunchtime) and talk this over with them. They'll give you an explanation of all your possible options. (btw, if your item is the size of a lighter, it's more than 1/4 inch thick.)
