English is obligatory for airline pilots flying outside their own domestic airspace.. This is how a Colombian airliner came to crash in New York state: its pilot's English was not idiomatic enough to convey to ground control the urgency of his need for clearance to land (they understood he was low on fuel but failed to grasp just how low).
Many countries insist on academic research papers having an abstract in English. I have come across examples in these of such woefully poor English that I only understood them on reading the accompanying abstract in French. However, promotion usually turns on publication in a journal of international standing, and most such journals only accept papers submitted in American English.
This trend will continue: too many influential people nowadays have a vested financial or political interest in the increasing adoption of English. This is most unfortunate. English is far too idiomatic, phonetically unclear and semantically ambiguous for any foreigner ever to be safely entrusted with it. This of course can have some unintended consequences. Joseph Conrad only ever got published because Stanley Unwin's publishers' reader mistook his heavily Polish-influenced English for some original and fascinating stylistic innovation.
Source(s): Just enough acquaintance with a variety of languages to realise that any one of them would make a less hazardous alternative for international communication. These include French, Latin, German, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and even Welsh, and I have successfully written for publication in Portuguese, and translated from it.. - Ted CLv 61 decade ago
I don't know about research papers having to be written in English, but all airline pilots anywhere in the world have to communicate to the ground in English.

True, that represents the state of world power when those conventions were introduced. Similarly medicine, law and the church use Latin. But no one speaks that language natively any more.
