Exactly: (if some of this is too basic, ignore that part - I'm just assuming no knowledge just in case)

In every song you hear there is a chord structure. The chords change throughout the song to provide interest and harmony to the melody (melody is "the tune"). Usually you hear the chords being played rhythmically (strummed on guitar) by a rhythm guitar or keyboard. In some music you'll hear the chords on off-beats such as the mandolin in country/bluegrass or the pah-pah of horns in OomPah type brass band music.

Each chord is comprised of a series of notes. For example: Cmaj7 chord is C E G B - play those four all at once and you have a Cmaj7 - the rhythm guitar player will probably play them by strumming them in some sort of pattern.

The C in that chord is called the root of the chord and it's the bass note when played by the guitar or piano player. It's the bottom of the chord and the foundation that tells us which chord we're hearing. The bass player (could be a bass guitar, string bass, tuba, piano, etc...) could just play that C and hold it out as long as the chord is in use and that'd be "the bass" (technically called "pedal bass"). It'd also be boring and he'd doze off. Sometimes he just plays that same note over-and-over until the chord changes, then he plays the new chord's root over-and-over until the chord changes again. Still a little boring.

So, often he creates a "bass line" that always (almost always) revolves around that note. He can include other notes to get there or leave it - he can "walk the bass" to add interest - but, he always tries to get back to that root of the chord - the bass. He'll spend a lot of time playing whatever notes are at the bottom of the chords in a song.

The main role of the bass player in a band is to establish the foundation (root) of each chord so that the chords all have a bottom. That bottom is "the bass".

If there's no drummer, his other important role is to set the beat/tempo. He'll make sure that bass note hits on the first beat of every measure exactly in time the way a drummer uses his bass drum to make your foot start tapping. A bass player and drummer working together set "the groove" which is the part of a song that gets you wanting to dance.

There's an instrument called the bass guitar, and it is generally used to keep the same backbeat going.

That backbeat is called the base, whether or not it is being produced by a guitar. That constant thumping sound. The eternal beat that exists before the singing, before the lead guitar, before the solos, making everything fall into line, usually beating in 4s. The one that replicates your heart and makes you feel like your heart is beating through the speakers when you loiter too close to the speakers at a hip hop concert. That is the bass.

    Or else it's a fish.

It's the low end of the sound, that is, the sounds that are low in terms of their pitch. On a string bass, this can go as low as around 40 Hertz.

bass is the lower deeper notes while treble is the higher sharper notes, the bass guitar is so named because it is basically a guitar but produces a lower sound

Yes, but you would need to get lessons or learn from a source geared towards 5-string. Trying to transpose directly would not work.
