My couch is light color and I want it to be dark. Can it be done?

Not a good idea,it may rub off on clothing.Try using a dark throw cover on it.

You can dye a couch, but it may be a bad idea. It would smell strong for like 3 years. If you put to much dye, it would sink through the cushion and down the thin cloth mat under the bottom cushion, and make the wood under weary from wetness, and go through the bottom, and leak all over the floor...

Not really ...The type of dye you need is to get a saturated color, is the reactive dyes, which require also salt & soda ash in order to be fixed on fabric. Even using an air brush the couch will need to be saturated to be rinsed then dried quickly.
I suggest pricing a good ready made or custom made slipcover. Then see what selling your couch would net you and purchasing a good used one in the color you want. http://winnipeg.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-furniture...
