Replace a CV boot in my car?

So my mechanic tells me I have a cracked CV boot and it will run me 250 to fix it. I am not paying that. I own a 2002 Toyota Camery. Where can I go to find out what I need to do the job myself?

CV Boots can be a little tricky to replace yourself, as it requires you to get behind the wheel hub to replace it, however, doing it yourself is the most cost effective way to do it. Split boots make it easier to replace, but you have to be careful to insure that it is installed correctly, so the grease doesn't leak out as the CV axle spins.

You can get the Boots, Grease, and the boot clamps from any local O'Reilly's auto parts store for maybe $30-40. To make sure the clamps are tight, I'd also recommend picking up a pair of boot clamp pliers to insure that your clamps are nice and tight.

Buy yourself a rebuilt 1/2 shaft. They are inexpensive and you get new inner and out joints and boots already installed. Just remove the 1 bad 1/2 shaft and replace it. If you decide that you want to replace the boot only like other people here said to do with a split boot, then you need to make sure that you wash the bearing completely, if you miss any debris at all it will eat up the joint and the bearing will let go leaving the car inoperable.

    good luck..........

They do make a cv boot that's split down the middle and you will wrap it around the cv joint. in the U.S. is below 20 USD. it extremely is a kit that comes w/ a degreaser spray, the boot, new grease, & 2 clamps. an entire alternative boot calls for you to do away with the axel. it extremely is totally labour extensive & that could desire to take a pair of hrs + areas. $3 hundred-4 hundred USD here for that.

its not that easy of a job if you dont know much about cars. It is easier to replace the hole cv axel. It is kind of expensive. You can get the parts from any parts store, you will need a socket for your axel nut, you need to be able to get the ball joint and tie rod out. You will also need transmission fluid to replace the stuff that comes out when you pull the cv axel out.

the cheapest and easiest way to replace it is get a split boot. with a split boot you don,t have to pull the axle but you will need grease when you buy the boot.
