    *Thanks for providing more detail.

Legal Note: I assume that you are just backing up one copy for yourself, as you would do with a VHS. Do not share with Friends or the Web. Before going ahead with any video file transfers, please ensure that your not breaking any of Shaw Cable's policies, as the policies may not allow transferring. Shaw Cable may reserve the right to not have you as a customer or press charges and haul you into court.

If your cable provider does not mention in their terms that you can not do the above, than go ahead and try this, you have 3 options:

1, You can use a capture device. Since you have a LapTop, you will need a USB TV tuner, ask the SalesGuy if they have a Dual-Tuner. A Dual-Tuner will allow you to record 2-Shows at the same time or Watch 1 Show while Recording Another. Install Software+Driver. Play the show or movie on your PVR/DVR and press record on your LapTop, follow booklet instructions blah, blah, blah... its that simple. VHS to DVD supports Single Tuner and *might* support Dual-Tuner and its Standard Def only.

2, The *DeskTop Computer* Hard Drive inside your PVR/DVR is 3.5inch SATA, once your inside the PVR/DVR get a Star (Philips) Screw Driver and UnScrew the drive. If your PVR/DVR still has warranty, it will void the warranty. You can try this, no guarantees, Amazon sells their own stuff unlike Ebay:

    http://www.amazon.com/USB-to-eSATA-SATA-Adapter/dp...

    Canada: http://www.amazon.ca/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-a...

***100% good feedback sellers, no Neutral feedback below:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-External-3-5-SATA-HDD-...

3, If you get a newer PVR/DVR with FireWire, you can try this:

There are ways to transfer info or data fro a PVR an DVR as for the unit the model and the company we are not allowed to answer these questions. I will say that it can be done and many have found ways to do this please take the time and go over to AVS Forum and do some searching and see what you come up with.
