LapTop Connection Problem HELP !!?

My GranDaughter had got a used laptop and has tried to find a wi-fi signal to connect to but no luck. I could understand this if she got messages to sign in and use a password to log on but she does'nt get that far.

She gets this message DHEP and allso "not set up for wireless internet.

Does this mean we need to buy something like a net-work card ? She has a Linskeys router but should she even use the router because she has no modem and since she is'nt paying for internet what good could the router do ?

Thanx in advance for any info,i have a fealing i may be going to the local computer shop to resolve this problem.

Anyway 10 points for a good answer
