In Bible times, did Jewish Laws require couples to obtain a marriage license?
My friend is divorcing, and says if she ever finds someone new, she'll just shack up. This goes against Christianity.
She says she doesn't need the government's blessing because our present government wants to get rid of God anyway, so why does she need get married? Can't God bless the marriage without the government's approval?
I reminded her that Jesus said we should obey the laws of man as long as they don't contradict the laws of God.....to "Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Cesar's, and unto God the things that are God's" Matthew 22:21
But I'm wondering......did the people in those times actually have to obtain the government's endorsement, or blessing if you will, by getting a license to be married?
Thank you all for your input.
1. John, your answer makes no sense at all.
2. Dust, I asked for a bit of historical fact, not your personal opinion.

No. They obtained the family's council on each side and the villages as well. Gifts were exchanged by each family, and in the time of Mary and Joseph they were officially engaged first where they received all the "rights" associated with marriage, but did not live with one another until the Bridegroom procession, but in all the sense of the word they were married because to "dis-engage" they had to seek a "bill of divorcement.
When Mary became pregnant she was, for all practical purposes, "married".

I don't know for sure, but I doubt it very much. The only reason people have to get marriage licences now is to verify their identities and make sure the potential bride and groom aren't related.
The ancient Jews wouldn't have cared as much because nearly everyone that lived in any given village would have been intermarrying and breeding for generations. If they had made marrying your cousin (or whatever) against the law, no one would have gotten married.

Im sure they had marriage license, and it might be scriptural. Ancient Israel was very advanced for its time.
