About how much would it cost to travel to Italy for 1month. I want to go almost EVERYWHERE in Italy?

I did some research and found round trip ticket out of Chicago ranging from $780-880 (flight found on orbitz.com, 1month ahead of scheduled departure)

so here is what I would guess, for just myself to go I guessed:

$850-round trip ticket

$1200 for breakfast/lunch/dinner/snacks for 1month

$1500 for lodging ($50/night for 30 days=1500)

$200 for gifts/souvenirs

$200 for transportation (KEEP IN MIND I WANT TO GO EVERYWHERE Rome, Sicily, Florence, Palermo, Venice, almost everywhere)

$50 for entrance fees to museums, etc

Totaling around $4000

So to be safe would I need around $4200???

IS THIS RIGHT??? TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK???

So if I had another person travel with me would it cost $8,400 for the both of us?

The weak points on your plan:

$200 for transportation (KEEP IN MIND I WANT TO GO EVERYWHERE Rome, Sicily, Florence, Palermo, Venice, almost everywhere)

No way. Even using slow trains (which are anyway the best and usually cheaper way to move in Italy) you're going to spend far more than that; take a look at Ferrovie dello Stato website

    http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html

$50 for entrance fees to museums, etc

You could visit just four or five good museums, without a guide, with 50$.

    Also:

    $1500 for lodging ($50/night for 30 days=1500)

hotels or hostels with a fare lower than $50 per night do exist, but they are the most likable to be fully booked, so you have to book them in advance; since you plan to move constantly rather than staying in one or two hotels, this may be a problem.

I'd rather suggest to shorten your visit and concentrate on lesser areas/cities.

I personally wouldnt have a set amount. Italy is so entrancing with its local cuisine and attractions, and places of the beaten path, that sometimes, you just want it all.

BUT, for the traveling part, this is waht i reccomend:

    Rome, 4/5 days at least

    Pompei, day trip

Sorrento and Amalfi Coast, 2/3 days

    Capri, day trip

Pisa, day trip to visit only the tower

Florence, 3 days if you wish to visit Uffizi, 1 day is required only for this museum

Cinque Terre, is ideal for a relaxing holiday, spend here some days

    Venice, 2 days

    Verona, day trip

    Milan, day trip

do not forget to visit Tuscany, reserve an agriturismo (farmhouse) for a week: not miss Chianti and Crete Senese, Lucca, S.Gimignano,.....

Do not forget Sicily (sea and culture), if you love blue sea take some days to visit Sardinia (the south is less touristy, but the sea is still wild, incredible colors)

It's all worth visiting, but how much time you spend in each place depends on your personal interests.

travel expenses just depend on the time you go.

It can be very warm/hot in summer, and there could be days when you wouldn't want to do very much in the middle of the day. It's also generally the busiest tourist season. You might consider spending a week away from the usual destinations in some countryside spot with a pool and a car for exploring.

I think you should allow more money for transportation and entrance fees. Remember, the Dollar isn't worth as much as the Euro.

It is possible to get to Sicily by train but the more convenient way is by airplane. It may be possible to fly cheaply into Trapani, Palermo, or Catania but you need to allocate more money.

If you go to the Colosseum and Pompei you'll have spent $50 on admission to those two attractions right there.

You can save some money by staying in hostels. Some hostels are nicer than others but I think all are cheaper than $50/night. You can cut a little more if you take trains overnight. You can leave Venice at night and arrive in Rome by morning. That's one night right there where you don't have to pay for lodging.

if you want to go everywhere a month probably isn't long enough. you could spend a month in rome and venice and not see it all. museums alone could take up the month

lodging at $50 a night maybe ok, might be more

    gifts/souvenirs at $200 doesn't sound like enough

transportation at $200 doesn't sound like enough, specially if you want to go everywhere

museums at $50 doesn't even sound like enough for rome alone

your estimate includes $200 extra, only 5% should be more like 25%

i suggest a minimum budget of $6000 per person for what i am guessing is a once in a lifetime trip, more would be better

if all you have is a month i suggest you figure out in advance what you want to see. are there places you might want to spend more than one day?

bear in mind travel is going to eat up a bit of your month. driving from rome to venice could take 6 hours or more, roughly 330 miles one way

i have spent some time in italy while in the us army. i highly recommend a visit to the lake country in northern italy. in particular i really enjoyed the country side around lake como

If you want to go EVERYWHERE it will cost an infinite amount of time and money. Can't be done so you need to revise your question

oh, don't drive, take the train, much more relaxing and you can see things rather than worrying about foreign driving standards - especially in Italy it can be a bit scary in the big cities
