What is "the cloud" or "a cloud"?

I have Windows 7 and I keep seeing the commercials saying "too the cloud" - but what is the cloud and how do I use it? I see nothing different about Windows 7 other then many of the programs like Moviemaker have links (icons) to get things posted on Facebook, Twitter or Youtube with the click of a button. Is that the cloud? If so, big deal.

    Put simply, it's a virtual Hard Drive you can access anywhere.

    Go onto hotmail.com and log in. Look for Sky Drive, it lets you store any files you want up to 50GB.
