Back when the telephone system used dial pulses instead of DTMF tones, 212 was the code that required the smallest number of dial pulses (2+1+2=5 pulses). The largest cities got the codes with the fewest pulses. For example:

    213 Los Angeles

    214 Dallas

    215 Philadelphia

    216 Cleveland

    312 Chicago

    313 Detroit

    314 St Louis

    412 Pittsburgh

    414 Milwaukee

    512 Austin

    513 Cincinnati

    612 Minneapolis

Note that these codes all had "1" as the middle digit - to dial "0" requires 10 dial pulses.

    I live in NYC

Im guessing your talking about NYC right?

A couple of years back people hated it because it was something new to remember.

Now they have 929, or 979, i forgot the new one.

Plus certain areas, for example, poor, dirty areas of NY have different area codes. People dont want to be associated with those codes
