Advice on a new cell phone - Verizon is my carrier?
My husband has an older model blackberry and it is time to upgrade. Our contract is with Verizon. has anyone purchased one of the new droid phones and if so what did you think of it? He uses his phone for both calls and email, and I'm sure would try out APPs in time. Thanks!
His current plan includes web access and I think 1400 minutes of talk time for about $120 a month. Would a droid phone increase those costs by having to add an additional data plan as well? I suppose it's something we need to ask Verizon, but if you have any experience with a good contract to select I would appreciate that as well. Mostly he uses it to read email from his gmail account - doesn't "surf" with it a lot, but does use the browser feature from time to time to look up things. For example, if we are going to a restaurant, he will look up the phone number to call for reservations. Not a heavy surfer or texter, though. Thanks again!

The Blackberry automatically requires data, the same data plans as the android phones.
As for phones, I would recommend the Samsung Fascinate or Continuum. The Galaxy S phones are great, I've seen quite a few of Motorola's droids come back threw our doors because people are having problems. But I rarely see a Fascinate.
For his purposes the Fascinate is spectacular. The screen looks great, its a very light phone, and has great battery life.
If your looking for a serious recommendation though. I would say get the BlackBerry Bold 9650 or BlackBerry 3G for him, and drop him back to the $15 a month data plan. Unless he thinks he's going to be using apps and watching video, a Droid of any kind will be a bit overkill.

Android has taken over. About 80% of new Verizon smartphones are Android.
I have a droid-X. Great phone, easy to read the screen. I was worried about typing on the touch-screen, but its easy and very reliable (Had an LG envy touch, the touch screen was not reliable). Also, the droid-X has a ton of memory.
The more apps you use, the more memory and processor you need. Don't go for the low-end models if you think you're going to use apps. Note that the phone comes with apps pre-installed, like google maps.
And get an unlimited data plan if you can.

I LOVE the new Droid!!!!!! I'm 14 and I use it for phone, texting, and email and web. It's really fast and easy to learn and work with. I had the blackberry storm...hated it and used my babysitting money to buy me the Droid one month ago. It wa sooo worth all the hours I spent getting paid to watch little kids. You won't be disapointed with the Droid at all!!!
