How do I permanently delete my msn/hotmail email address?

Question

It has been usurped by scammers and spammers who have been sending spam for viagra and other crap to my email contacts even while I'm not online, it's become embarrassing.

The last straw was when a friend responded to a fake email today that had addressed her by name and asked her was she going away for the Christmas holidays! - with an attachment that she didn't notice for some berries.

Here is the transaction (note - I didn't send the first message);

I reluctantly have to delete this email account that I have used for years, how do I go about it? I checked all the options on my email homepage but there is no option to 'delete account'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Close your MSN Hotmail account

* To close a free Hotmail account, sign in to Hotmail using the account. Click Help, and then follow the instructions in the topic named "Close your MSN Hotmail account."
    * To cancel an MSN Hotmail Extra Storage account or other MSN subscription, go to MSN Billing.

Note

A free Hotmail account becomes inactive if you do not sign in for 30 days, or within the first 10 days after signing up for an account. Once an account becomes inactive, all messages, folders, and contacts are deleted, but the account name is still reserved. If the account stays inactive for a further 90 days, it is permanently deleted.

2. Enter your mail ID and password.

3. Click on "Close account" button.

4. Your account will be reserved for 270 days so that if you want to re-activate it, you can do within 270 days. After 270 days it'll be deleted permanently and you'll not be able to re-activate it.

Before deleting your account, scan your computer for malware and viruses. There's plenty of free programs out there that will do this. You'll simply have the same problem with another e-mail account if your computer's not clean. Once your computer's clean, change the password to your e-mail account and hopefully the problem will be gone. You should also get your contacts to scan their computers as well, chances are the virus has sent itself onto them as well.

2.Enter your Hotmail E-mail ID and password.

3. Click on "Close account" button.

4. You can reactivate your account within 270 days if you want it. After 270 days your account will be deleted permanently and then you will not be able to reactivate it.
