Protestants like to pick and choose from the Catholic tradition what suits them. There are a few major differences but there are still major similarities. But then, you get those crazy fundamentals that just want to abolish everything, including Christmas, and then want to take everything in the Bible literally and interpret it themselves and then do exactly what it says, without taking into account the Church that wrote and compiled it, mistranslation, traditional jewish culture at the time, and numerous other issues which contribute to erroneous interpretation (which then leads to contradiction).

And before you know it, every fundamental Christian will be growing their hair long and traipsing around the countryside, walking on water and raising people from the dead, just because the Bible says to "live like Jesus"

    :P

  • I don't know, Miss Mouse. For the Catholic haters, I give credit for putting their money where their mouth is and not participating. At least their hatred is consistent. The mainline protestants may have some beefs with Catholics, but they recognize, to a certain degree, the authority of the Church. The ones who are haters yet continue to celebrate? Well, they don't talk about that much because they'd have to admit that the Church made the proper decision.

In the true spirit of protestantism, shouldn't each of the 365 days be chosen by some denomination as the only true day to celebrate Christmas?

...of course that means, since there are more denominations than days, some denominations would have to agree with each other.

oops, I forgot: Eastern Orthodox operates on a different calendar. That's why our family celebrated Christmas twice each year.

@happygael: I didn't think Tim the Tool-Man had been on 44-years; maybe he's weak at math, too.

Protestants used to be Catholic and are still Christians. Why fight over a day that was selected at random hundreds of years after the fact? I celebrate the Fourth of July on the fourth even though we all know that by the time the documents were signed by all the representatives, it was way after that.

everybody is yelling about sabbaths holidays etc

    Read this and think

    Romans 14: 5

(For) one person considers one day more important than another, while another person considers all days alike. Let everyone be fully persuaded in his own mind.

Whoever observes the day, observes it for the Lord.

    especially ART and Susanna

Art How about telling us who the carpenter is that you have been following for 44 years.

Protestantism was never much against the Catholics and reformation had only shed a little light on faith. It never changed our view on how we should believe.

Because if they go farther apart from Catholicism they wouldn't be Christians like Mormonism and Jehovah's Witnesses and they know that.

Why not? Why be so divided about EVERYTHING...can't we agree on anything.....the celebration of our Lord should not be cause for argument.

Because they are used to not questioning anything. They are docile.

Start a movement to change it, Professor. Let's all see how that works out for you. You might even get to see your picture on the Fox News, I reckon!
