  • toshiba laptop keyboard problem?

i have a toshiba laptop (satellite pro l500). recently i have been having some problems with some specific keys.

the x,c,v,m and l-ctrl keys occasionally become unresponsive. during this time, nothing short of hitting the keys will work. the problem comes and goes, but it's getting quite irritating, especially since the problem seems to be getting more frequent.

I suspect it's a problem with the keyboard itself, maybe the circuits. please tell me it isn't.

any advice? could it just be a foreign object in the keyboard that needs removing? or does it sound like i should be getting the keyboard replaced?

    thanks

  • can divorce lead to a feminist (or anti-masculist) world view as a coping mechanism for women?

Suppose a woman's husband cheats on her and they get divorced. Is it likely that the woman (and her daughters if they're old enough) will develop a more feminist world view as a result?

For example, perhaps being more supportive (than they previously were) of gender equality, ordination of women (women clergy), perhaps a slightly more left-wing political stance.

Are they more likely to exhibit the following traits as well:

    - less trusting of men

    - denying the importance of fatherhood in child-rearing

I just thought that a woman having been emotionally hurt by a husband (through infidelity and therefore abuse of trust) may downplay the role of men in society and in the family. Not sure if this is actually the case, so I thought I'd ask.

If you know of any academic studies on this topic, please share so I can do some further reading.

    thanks :)

  • Once saved, always saved?

This question is targeted at those who believe this interesting concept.

Let's look at the memoir of the fictional character 'Bob' (recently deceased):

"I was baptised after professing my faith in Christ. I believed whole-heartedly. Thereafter I did many wonderful things, bringing many non-believers closer to Jesus. I tripled church attendance at my local non-denominational church because of my preaching and charitable deeds for the poor. Everything was going just dandy, until several years later, I found out that my wife was cheating on me. All of a sudden I felt a great anger and before I could restrain myself, I killed my wife. Her lover was soon to follow. From that point on, my life spiraled downwards. I gave God the finger and worshiped the "green fairy" instead (that is, my bottle of Absinthe which I drank to excess every night). I developed a habit of cursing God and everyone I had ever met in my pitiful existence. I worked one day a week (on the Sabbath), simply to show God how it is (and to get more money to fuel my alcohol and drug addiction). I murdered my parents because they introduced me to the joke that is religion in the first place. I coveted my neighbour's wife (more than once), as well as many other women (and not necessarily with consent). I stole all the time: clothes from the poor, money from the rich, food from the shops, cars from car dealers, drugs from drug dealers.

I lied pathologically, just to cause suffering to everyone.

And my neighbour, I just took everything from him. I would have felt sorry for him, but I just couldn't. I was too busy being envious of what other people had and stealing it from them.

This went on for years, without me dying, miraculously. Until one day, I went on a murderous rampage, killing half the city. In the end, I went down in a hailstorm of bullets, with a very unrepentant grin on my face."

Was Bob in a state of grace even to his death? Was a mere profession of his faith many years ago enough to save him despite his unruly and inappropriate behaviour? Is Bob in heaven now? Do you think Bob deserves hell (whether or not he actually went to hell)?

Answering that Bob was never a true believer in the first place is an unsatisfactory answer.

  • diplomacy board game rule -- supply centers?

In the game of Diplomacy, are you forced to 'take over' a supply centre if you occupy its territory, regardless of whether it belongs to an ally or not?

If that's the case, it makes it pretty inconvenient if you want to pass through territory occupied by your ally.

    thanks

  • a prayer for Queensland flash-flood victims?

Would you spare a quick prayer for the victims of recent flash-flooding in Queensland? (Australia).

There are a few confirmed dead, but many missing. The floods have ravaged whole towns and destroyed a lot of the infrastructure. The flood was likened to an inland tsunami. And the worst of the flooding is still yet to come.

Your prayers for their safety are really appreciated.

    God bless you

  • The Book of Mormon --- is it real?

I have heard reasoning against the validity of the Book of Mormon, so I want to present some of those arguments and give any Latter Day Saints an opportunity to present their own arguments.

    - The Book of Mormon is based on the King James Version of the Bible, a relatively recent translation. The King James translators added words (italicised) to help the readers, yet in some cases these are preserved in the Book of Mormon.

    - The Book of Mormon has some serious grammatical errors. Including the misuse of personal pronouns in some cases.

    - The idea that Christianity became corrupted within a few generations and that the Church fell out of favour with Christ. This is in serious conflict with the verse of Matthew 16:18-19 --- "And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven."

    - Early Church writing shows no evidence of Mormon doctrine

    - There is no archaeological evidence to indicate a great battle between the Nephites and Lamanites in 421AD. There is archaeological evidence of battles which are described in the Bible, which occurred many centuries before this.

    - Latter Day Saints do not believe in the Holy Trinity, but instead believe that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit exist as entirely separate entities. Alma 11:28-31 (from the Book of Mormon) concludes that there is only one God.

    - The Book of Mormon says that honey bees were introduced to the Americas around 2000BC. They were actually introduced by the Spanish in the 1400s.

Any answers in defense of the Book of Mormon are encouraged.

    Thanks

  • calculating poker odds with wild cards?

I need to know how to calculate the odds of poker hands with wild cards. I actually want to know how to calculate, not what the odds are.

At the moment I only know how to calculate odds with 1+ standard decks (equal number of ranks in each suit), but I don't know how to calculate odds when there are cards which don't fall into the standard ranks and suits (i.e wild cards).

    Any mathematicians around?

    Thanks
