Can I record 16:9 with a Standard Definition Recorder/TV?

I record on a standard def. TV and a standard def. capture card. Is it possible for me to record in 16:9 with a non-HD/non-widescreen TV? If so, do I need a certain capture card besides the one I use currently, the Diamond VC500?

Thanks! :)

All you are recording is the video and audio information. The aspect ratio just comes along for the ride. On play back a 3x4 will play back full screan and a 9x16 will just have the black bars at the top and bottom on a 3x4 screen.
