Re: the word "entree"...?

How did the French word entrée meaning in terms of dining the first course or appetizer(s) (synonym of hor d'oeuvre) morph in American English to mean the principal plate or main course? Are there any other English speaking countries in which 'entree' means main course??

Well I'm Australian, and here we say "entrée" for the first course (the smaller meal before the main)...maybe youre mistaken? Do other Americans/Canadians say "entrée" for the main meal?
