  • A question about evolution...?

One thing about mutations resulting in new species evades my understanding. If a dramatic mutation resulting in a new gene or chromosome occurs to an individual how does it get passed on? The chances that the same dramatic mutation will occur to a second individual of opposite sex of the same species and the 2 individuals will meet and made are 99.9999999+% none.

  • Vis a Vis the Tornado Force Scale...?

The recent horrible tornadoes in Joplin and Tuscaloosa have been commonly described in the newspapers and in TV and radio commentaries (including NPR) as "Force 5 - with winds of up to 200 mph". But I always thought that Force 5 was winds of 300 mph and above - which is how it is described on Wikipedia. Certainly the damage in Joplin and Tuscaloosa suggest the latter. What is the story - has the Force Scale been changed or is the media (including NPR and The New York Times!!!) somehow getting it wrong???)

  • Buying beer and wine in Canada?

Is it true that aside for Ontario wineries being each allowed to have sales kiosks at a couple of supermarkets the only province where one can buy beer and wine generally at food markets, convenience stores and some gas stations, like in many of the USA states and in Europe, is Quebec??

  • Re: Malcom X,s Boston home....?

Do any others in SA land wonder, why I do, why Massachusetts and Boston, otherwise so adept at promoting historic sites, have not commemorated Malcom X's Boston home? I realize that it is still a private residence but even so I think that at least a plaque is merited.

  • Re: the word "entree"...?

How did the French word entrée meaning in terms of dining the first course or appetizer(s) (synonym of hor d'oeuvre) morph in American English to mean the principal plate or main course? Are there any other English speaking countries in which 'entree' means main course??

  • GM Volt advertising...?

Do you agree that GM's new Volt's advertising slogan (for the USA) of "It's More Car Than Electric"

  • Concerning the two bombs mailed from Yemen to Chicago synagogues...?

Am I the only person scratching his head over this news story? Why would terrorists mail packaged bombs from Yemen, packages from which which would most likely be intercepted and scrutinized

and inspected, instead of sending them from a terrorist cell located in western Europe?

  • Vis a vis Omar Khadr...?

Can someone please explain something? Omar Khadr was prosecuted by the USA government

for murder. But he was fighting in a military battle. I understand how he could be taken as a soldier of war and imprisoned as such but how could he be subject to criminal prosecution?

  • Question from contemplating Earl...?

At the present moment 105mph Hurricane Earl is churning up the USA's east coast...

It seems to me that a severe winter Nor'easter, with 60-70 mph northeasterly winds in a 500+ mile fetch, is much more severe and damaging to Cape Cod, Long Island, Massachusetts eastern coast, et al., than Earl, with an easterly and northeasterly fetch of only 100 miles or less, would be if it struck; Am I correct?

  • Hurricanes hitting Canada?

Why is it that American articles - or daily weather programs (like those today about Earl) never point out that the Canadian maritimes over the past 20 years have been hit by more storms than anyplace in the USA, save for Florida?? (and Earl expected to likewise hit Nova Scotia Saturday).

Is this not, in its way, another case of American arrogance and self-indulgence and ignorance?

  • Asian carp threat; so far...?

I keep reading how people in the midwest and the Chicago area in particular are apoplectic over the threat of the Asian carp making it into Lake Michigan, supposedly because it would decimate current Great Lakes fish stocks. Well, what has happened so far?? Have most of the other fish in the Mississippi and its tributaries been wiped out? None of the news stories about the Asian carp's

relentless spread up the Mississippi River system mentions this at all.
