We don't know how these packages were labeled or if relabeled during the course of the travel. We don't know who are involved. There is said to be a list of names yet so far only one woman has been arrested and released pending court.

It was a set up.

The US wants a free hand to do what it likes in Yemen, and the surrounding area.

As you say, why in the world would any Yemini do this, knowing it would incur the wrath of the US, without doing any damage.

As it turns out, it seems the so called devices were not even real ones,

-all the original tests said they were not bombs,

-then Obama said they were,

the appropriate pressure was put on all the people who originally found them safe, to test again,

and hey presto, they were declared to be real bombs.

It's pathetic, and transparent, but all that is needed is the public to have 2 simple memes in the mind

1.Yemen is out to get us.

2.We must deal with Yemen.

Everybody would get it if they thought for a moment about the initial thing (never mind the fake part of the story),

but people are too busy being distracted from a temporary scare.

Bush admin conjured up Biden laden threats for the 2004 and 2006 October surprise,

IMO - they were hoping that the bombs would escape screening. Apparently one was camoflauges so well that the British authorities missed it the first time they went through the shipment on the plane because they suspected that there was a bomb on board. It was not until a second sweep that somebody noticed that the color of the toner in the printer cartriage was white instead of black.

What really gets my interest is the targetting of synagouges in Chicago. This seems to be an odd choice of targets and implies that somebody involved in the plot felt that those synagoges had enough symbolic significance to their cause to justify an attack. This implies a terror cell inside the city of Chigaco.

It seems obvious to me that the terrorists involved were hoping for one of those episodes where they hit the proverbial "jackpot," with their targets being struck and death and mayhem caused.
