Submitting a photo to a magazine help?

I have a great photo that I want to submit to a wildlife magazine, so I went to that magazine's site to look up the information I needed (guidelines and whatnot). I read through it and this is what I read:

"D. Color: Only original transparencies (slides), 35mm and larger, and high-resolution digital images will be considered for publication. Color prints are not acceptable."

I took it with a digital camera, so I'd clearly be submitting a "high-resolution digital image" but the only way to submit work is by mail, not e-mail. If "color prints are not acceptable", how exactly to they want me to mail the image?

On a CD or jump drive. You would usually include a 4x6 print so they know what they're going to look at. Assume you will not get your media back. If they don't specify a file type in their guidelines I would include a JPEG and TIFF of the same photo.

Okay, a little tough love here. You will probably not hear back from her. Translating what she told you: "These are great shots, but we can't use them." The newspaper business is fast-paced. If your shots are going in a file, then they are likely to just sit there unless the newspaper is in dire need of an image and they're on a tight deadline. You'd have better luck if you take one or two of these approaches: 1. Ask her for an assignment. 2. Combine photos with copy. Except for major publications like National Geographic who have separate staff photographers and writers, magazines appreciate submissions that are ready for the press. If you give them excellent photos, then they must find somebody to write copy to go with them. On the other hand, if you submit an excellent article, then they have to find somebody to take the pictures to accompany it. It costs money and time in both cases. If you drop a finished product on their desk, then they'll be very happy because you saved them work and you helped solve the problem of filling the next edition.
