Why is the Virgin Mary always portrayed wearing blue?

In almost all paintings of Mary, she is wearing blue. Is there any reason for this?

Blue was the color worn by virgins (unmarried women) in 1st century Palestine.

Artistic license. Blue is the color of the sky (artist's concept of virgin purity) and was one of the easiest dyes/paints to make.
