Hinduism;There is one Goddess who has no temples or worship in Sanatana Dharma.She is The Goddess of Death,?

Why , even GODHOOD IS GIVEN TO DEATH? What kind of HELP does the Goddess of Death do?

I think no other faith called even Death as a goddess.(MRUTYU DEVATA)

The members who have no knowledge about the Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) may kindly refrain from passing sarcastic remarks .Thanks in advance.

Update:

EDIT;

@ Nitai Gaura and @ Nandi;

Thank you for the very informative answer.Ues Mrutyu ( Death is Masculine and we Normally refer Yamadharma raj for That.But you may kindly note that BOTH Deva amd Devata are two words are used for this Mrutyu (Death).Hence you may KINDLY note that I used both words GODDESS and GODHOOD.

In reality there is no Gender for any Deity,That is a seperate issue.In Nitai Gaura`s detailed answer , I feel many are Symbolic ,We have to go Behind or beyond to realize the real nature of the subject discussed.

It is a good information that there is Tempole in in Tamil nadu .Are there any poojas being done to it daily? Any information, if you know, Mr Nandi you please add.

Update 2:

Edit Contd;

I used '' What kind of HELP does the Goddess of Death do? '' In MY QUESTION .Leaving of GOD or GODDESS ( Because DEVATA is feminine and DEVA is masculine, MRUTYU DEVATA , I used Feminine word Goddess , and simultaneously.So , I think no other faith has given this STATUS to MRUTYU , as far as I know please.

Kaala Bairava is different.HE is not ''Death''.He was created by Shiva specially at the of DAKSHA YAGNAM..

So what is the Mercy or Kindness this GOD or GODDESS does ?Can you throw some light?

I thank the Indian Boy for answering and giving a good input.

Let us interact and Learn .I always say I am a Student here.

Update 3:

Edit ;

In Wikipedia too if you search for Goddess of Death you get some pages .I have seen them.So Death is Genderless and you may call it God or goddess of Death,Normally Mrityu Devata is most used in scriptures..

As said by one answerter Yama Dharmaraj and Yamuna are brother and sister.Yamuna is a Sacred River .

Yamadharma Raj is the Administrator and His Aide Chitra gupta maintains the records of all individuals as you are aware.

Yamadharma raj is Not MRUTYU DEVA .He is incharge of many things among them Sending Mrityu Devata at the proper time.

Vishnu, Shiva ,Kalabairava, Kaali, Chandi, lalita etc etc Gods and Goddesses have killed some demons at particular time...but they are NOT MRITYU DEVATAS,

Even Sr Rama and Sri Krishna killed many demons .Are they Mrityu Devataas? I think , NO.

So THE the DEATH stikes at the time we do not know.

But we call Mrutyu Devata , why? What kindness does the Goddess of Death show?

No one does any Vratam or Daily pooja to this Goddess.If a

Update 4:

EDIT:

The Human body is called ''Shareeram'' and'' deYham'' in Sanskrit.

This Shareeram has six stages , that are unavoidable and are called SHADOORMULU.(or Shad vikaarams)

The Shareeram means ' SeeryateY iti Shareerah' ( That which gradually gets changes and finally becomes ruins and disappears) . DeYham means '' dahateet it DeYhah"' ( That which will be Cremated Burnt is deyham)

Death is Inevitable..

If a person becomes old , and becomes incapacitated and bed ridden , unable to eat himself, unable to see and identify, unable to hear what is said, unable to move even, unable to do any thing little and depends on others` fully for any thing, even the nearest and dearest ones of the persons , after serving a month or two , we observe feel that better ''THE PERSON LEAVES THE WORLD''.This is Natural almost.If they are rich , they admit in a Hospital and pay the Hospital to take care of the person.

The PERSON then realizes , what the affections he so LOVINGLY WOVEN AROUND THEM A

Update 5:

Edit;

@ Sri Vidya Rajagopalan Ji.

Sir accept my namaskaarams .You have taken great troble to search the answer and it is evident in your answer how much strain you have taken.I tahnk you for sharing such rare knowledge with all of us here.

So there is GODDESS OF DEATH.In one of the links you gave, the final one, the Brahman grants the Goddess that SHE will not be blamed for the killings and the Sin of the persons in the shape of diseases wouyld be considered a cause for Death and never SHE will be blamed.

So Yamadharmaraj or any other is Not Death, as per the Bheeshma narration too.Goddess of Death is specially created.

Next , Sir , We Call MRUTYU DEVATA. So even Death has been given Goddess status.It is not so in any other religion or Dharma , as far as I know.

Please KINDLY add some few sentences or details that whether GODDESS of Death is a KIND one or Not? Is she showing Mercy on the Humans or hatred? .People shall not fear Death or Scold the Death.

So your few details will ma

Update 6:

Edit contd;

Please KINDLY add some few sentences or details that whether GODDESS of Death is a KIND one or Not? Is she showing Mercy on the Humans or hatred? .People shall not fear Death or Scold the Death.

So your few details will make the answer COMPLETE .Sir Kindly add some opinion of yours in this context.

Update 7:

Edit;

@ Sri Vidyarajagopalan ji;

You said in your answer , your interpretation as '' Answerer's interapretation: The Rupam is Changed now. It can not have all the three forms and thus can not be worshipped ''

May that is why we do not see the Goddess of Death is not worshipped any where ( as far as I know , as I asked in question).

But the Blame for Death is not attributed to Goddess of Death at any time, as the Brahman said.Whenever one dies, the people say . '' He died because of Illness/accident/ etc'' So Goddess of Death is Freed from being Blamed.

But She is a merciful one to be called Devata.Is that REASONABLE AND CORRECT ,SIR.

Update 8:

EDIT;

It is said by Elders , that If in a temple Either Sri Ramayana or Mahabhatrata or Mahabhagavatam are being recited or Pravachanms are made. First Before Starting Ramayana, SUNDARA KANDA MUST BE READ AT HOME and then after Sri Ramayana Pravachanam shall start in temple or Else where.

Similarly for Mahabharata, it is said ONE SHALL READ AND UNDERSTAND SHAANTI PARVAM and the mahabharata Pravachanams shall start.Because Shanti Parvam contains so many Dharmas and Dharma sukshmaas that we can not even imagine.

Update 9:

Edit contd;

Similarly before Mahabhagavata Pravachanams, the DASAMA SKANDAM shall be read and understood.

Because these ones, Sundara Kanda is upaasana Kanda, Shanti Parvam gives you enormous knowledge and gives Shanti to start with, and The Dasama Skandam makes you understand the real KRISHNA TATVAM.

The Shanti Parvam, ACTUALLY EXPLODES THE VISWAROOPA OF BHEESHMA PITAAMAHA`S DHARMIC KNOWLEDGE.It is fantastic to read and understand.

    Goddess of Death:

    In Hinduism the birth and actions of Goddess of Death are outlined in Mahabharata. This is available in Santi Parva where Bhishma gave an account of Death Godess to Yudhishthira .

    Mahabharata, Book 12, Chapter 248 to 250:

    Brahma, at the time of the creation of the universe, created a large number of living beings. These multiplied greatly as there was nothing like death then.

    A thought arose in the Brahma’s mind as to how he should destroy that overgrown population. Thereupon Brahma gave way to wrath, and in consequence of his wrath, a fire issued out of his body. With that fire born of his wrath, the Grandsire burnt all the quarters of the universe. This action resulted total destruction and so Sthanu (Lord Shiva) advised Brahma to try an alternate solution.

    Suppressing that fire that had been devastating the universe, the illustrious Brahman, adored of all, and possessed of illimitable puissance, then arranged for both birth and death in respect of all living creatures.

    (i) Birth of ‘Death of Goddess:

    Mahabharata, Book 12, Chapter 249, Verses 15 & 16:

    15 ‘upasamharatas tasya tam agnim rosajam tada

    pradurbabhuva visvebhyah khebhyo NARI mahatmanah

    16 krnsna raktambaradhara raktanetra talantara

    divyakundala sampanna divyabharanabhisita’

    After the Self born had withdrawn and suppressed that fire, there came out, from all the outlets of his body, a LADY attired in robes of black and red, with black eyes, black palms, wearing a pair of excellent ear-rings, and adorned with celestial ornaments.

    This Goddess of Death was reluctant to kill infants, youths, and aged ones who have done her no injury.

    (ii) Tapas by ‘Death of Goddess:

    She did tapas for fifteen billions of years first. Brahma repeated what he said earlier. Then she did tapas for standing upon one foot for twenty billions of years. Then she led a life in the woods with the deer for another long period consisting of ten thousand billions of years. She passed another twice ten thousand years, living upon air only as her sustenance. She observed the excellent vow of silence for eight thousand years, passing the whole time in water.

    Proceeding thence to the summit of Himavat where the deities had performed their great sacrifice, she stood there for hundred billions of years, supporting her weight upon only the toes of her feet with the object of gratifying the Grandsire with such an act of austerity.

    (iii) Brahma’s Boons to Goddess of Death:

    Brahma finally said, “Living creatures shall be afflicted by disease, and (dying) never cast the blame on you (Goddess of Death) and the blame is attributed to the disease (na tva dosena yasyanti vyadhisampiditah prajah, 12.250.29b)

    Brahma added,

    Mahabharata, Book 12, Chapter 250, Verses 30:

    30 “पुरुषेषु च रूपेण पुरुषस तवं भविष्यसि

    सत्रीषु सत्रीरूपिणी चैव तृतीयेषु नपुंसकम”

    30 ‘purusesu ca rupena purusas tvam bhavisyasi

    strisu strirupini caiva trtiyesu napumsakam’

    'you shall become a male in all male beings, a female in all female beings, and a eunuch in all those that are of the third sex.'

    (Answerer's interapretation: The Rupam is Changed now. 'It' can not have all the three forms and thus can not be worshipped! ) Edited: 'It' here means the worshipping idol or image.

    Later Brahma said,

    'Those tear drops that I see fallen from your eyes, shall take the form of terrible diseases and even they shall destroy men when their hours come.'

    (iv) Goddess of Death is Eternal righteousness (dharmah sanatanah):

    Mahabharata, 12.250.28:

    Brahma said to Goddess of Death:

    'Eternal righteousness shall now take refuge in you. Myself and all the deities shall always be employed in seeking your good.'

    (v) Is Death (Goddess) Merciful?:

    Yes, it is relatively true.

    (a) Death alone gives the choice to be born again;

    The vicious cycle. As Adi Shankara said, “punarapi jananam punarapi maranam punarapi jananijathare cayanam”.

    'Born again, dead again and back again to the womb of the mother'.

    It is also said," janma dukha jara dukha, jaya dukha punah punah samsara sagaram dukham tasmat jagrata jagrata"-

    'Beware of the ocean of the world of birth, death and entanglement for it is full of sorrow'.

    b) Or death is to attain Moksha;

    not to have the vicious cycle!!

  • Excellent answer by Srividya Rajagopalan Sir. It is totally a new subject I have learned today about the origin of Death mentioned in Mahabharata.

    There is a very old Tamil quote :

    ஆவதும் பெண்ணாலே அழிவதும் பெண்ணாலே !

    Aavathum Pennaale, Azivathum Pennale.

    Means:

    Creation is out of women & also Destruction out of women.

    Most probably, the learned people who framed this quote might have done after knowing about this story of Origin of Goddess of Death, as women only gives birth and Goddess of death takes away the life.

    I dont know much about but on net i found two ....may be they are wrong

    Mara is a Hindu goddess of death.

    In Hinduism, Mara brings death in the same way that Kama brings love and intimacy. On their own, neither is important, but act more as attributes than as deities. Generally references to Mara as an individual are referenced to Maya Devi (Queen Māyā).

    Goddess Kali

    Kali is one of the many forms of Shakti. Maha Kaali is the fiercest of all goddesses of Hinduism. The word Kali has its roots in the Sanskrit word "Kaal" which means time. And nothing escapes from time. Goddess Kali is sometimes referred as the goddess of death.

    If i may make it simple, lets just understand that spiritually enlightened people like adi shankara, ramana maharshi, sanath kumara etc always used to say,

    "punarapi jananam, punarapi maranam, punarapi janani jhatare shayanam, Iha samsare bahu dhusthre kripaya paare pahi murare"

    Their pain is that this body is putting boundaries for their abilities to experience god or bramhananda. they are tired of taking birth over and again and sleeping in a sack of urine and stools and then coming out to this world to do the same thing over and again. all they want is to be free from this cycle of life and stay independent of bodies and stay one with god. and the only god who can give us an exit from this pain is the goddess of death, and the Purakritha karma of us. hope it helps. I am not posting here for a like or share, but out of pure happiness that there is someone willing to know the secret.

    Sir, Though in religious affairs/answers, I am very poor, but I wish to answer this question.

    First of all, as I know it is not a Goddess but a God (you may say It, as a Goddess because of the Mantras being uttered during a last rite of a person, which I am not aware).

    There is a particular Temple in a small village named Brahma Desam in Tirunelveli District for Lord Shiva. The Presiding Deity is named Kailaasanathar and His Consort Bruhan Nayaki.

    In that temple there is a seperate Sannadhi for Mruyu Devta named Maha Kankaala.(Seven feet tall,which the priest say the biggest idol for any of these kind of Devtas all over India like Bhairava,etc). In that Sannidhi you can witness in all eight sides all the Disa Devtas (East,South East,South,South West, West, North West, North and North East) pray him alonwith Ramba, Urvasi,Brahma and Lord Vishnu. The whole small room is sandalised to cool the Kankaala, being an angry Devta and only once in a year it is being re-sandalised.

    Here people believe that Kankaala is the Mruyu Devta and behind his Sannidhi, they have a Samsaana(Burning Ghat) also on the banks of Tamrabharani river.

    This is my humble submission.

    @@The questioner Shri Radhakrishnaji :--Poojas are done to the Deity Kankaala Devta only on Pournami (Full Moon) Days.

    @@@Sometimes I wonder why "Thumbs Down" to my answer. It may be irrelavant to those who gave the TD, but I think it is useful to others. Thanks to the person who gave the "Thumbs Down". But if he is true in himself, he/she should have come out and say that "I only gave the "TD" and for so and so reasons. That is is the spirit of true Hinduism.

    @@About Kaala Bhairava: Kaala Bhairavaa is considered as a Security Guard of Lord Shiva and in South Tamil Nadu, it is a practice in all Shiva Temples to perform a pooja to Kaala Bhairavaa at the last and the keys of the temple put on his feet as He consider to protect the Temple being a Security.

    Even some of the family, when they leave their town for a short period, used to place the keys of their respective houses/homes at the feet of Kaala Bhairavaa and take them as they believe that He will protect their house/home from burgalary/calaminities.

    SB 4.8.1: The great sage Maitreya said: The four great Kumara sages headed by Sanaka, as well as Narada, Rbhu, Hamsa, Aruni and Yati, all sons of Brahma did not live at home, but became urdhva-reta, or naisthika-brahmacaris, unadulterated celibates.

    SB 4.8.2: Another son of Lord Brahma was Irreligion, whose wife's name was Falsity. From their combination were born two demons named Dambha, or Bluffing, and Maya, or Cheating. These two demons were taken by a demon named Nirrti, who had no children.

    SB 4.8.3: Maitreya told Vidura: O great soul, from Dambha and Maya were born Greed and Nikrti, or Cunning. From their combination came children named Krodha (Anger) and Himsa (Envy), and from their combination were born Kali and his sister Durukti (Harsh Speech).

    SB 4.8.4: O greatest of all good men, by the combination of Kali and Harsh Speech were born children named Mrtyu (Death) and Bhiti (Fear). From the combination of Mrtyu and Bhiti came children named Yatana (Excessive Pain) and Niraya (Hell).

    http://vedabase.net/sb/4/8/en2

    At least according to the above description, mrtyu is masculine, not feminine.

    Sometimes, Yamaraja is said to be the personality of death.

    If that is the case where Yamaraj the personality of eeath is considered, then he has some temples and Yamaraja's sister, Yamuna is considered, she too has some temples.

    Are you referring to Shiva? If so, I thought she was also the goddess of birth.
